VIK Winery
The VIK winery was established in 2004 by Norwegian entrepreneurs Alex and Carrie, who are wine lovers, art collectors and hoteliers. The VIK is situated in Chile’s Millahue Valley within the Cachapoal Valley. The couple meticulously selected this location after a two-year scientific search, aiming to cultivate world-class wines in a region known as “Lugar de Oro” or “Golden Place” by the native Mapuche people. Spanning 4,300 hectares, the estate is planted with 327 hectares of vines across 12 distinct microclimates, each contributing unique characteristics to the wines.
This ultra-modern winery opened its doors in December 2014 and has a glass-floored room overlooking the fermentation tanks as well as 360-degree views of the vines. At the entrance visitors can walk on top of the flowing “mirror of water” (which is actually the roof of the winery) and cools the barrel room located beneath it.
VIK’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to shine through. The winery employs sustainable practices such as night harvesting to preserve grape integrity and spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts. Innovative techniques like “Barroir” involve aging wines in barrels crafted from century-old oak trees sourced from the estate, while “Amphoir” utilizes clay amphorae made from local soils to enhance micro-oxygenation and impart distinctive minerality.
The winery produces several premium wines, including the flagship VIK, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot, and Syrah. Other notable offerings are Milla Cala, La Piu Belle, and La Piu Belle Rosé. These wines are characterized by their elegance, complexity, and a pure expression of the Millahue terroir.
VIK’s commitment to excellence has garnered international recognition. In 2023, it was named the best Chilean winery and ranked third globally by ‘World’s Best Vineyards’, praised for its avant-garde architecture, innovative winemaking, and immersive visitor experiences. The winery also offers a luxury retreat, VIK Chile, where guests can engage in activities like hiking, horseback riding, cooking classes and spa treatments.
Visitors can also enjoy lunch at the VIK Pavilion restaurant located next to the winery.
