Colchagua Wineries

Polkura Winery

Situated just an hour from the Pacific coast, Polkura Winery is a boutique operation born from a shared dream between friends and winemakers Sven Bruchfeld and Gonzalo Muñoz. Their journey began in 1998 with a revelatory tasting of Mediterranean-style Syrah in southern France, inspiring them to create their own expression of this noble grape. By 2002, they had found their ideal site in Marchigüe —a rugged, coastal-influenced corner of Colchagua—and planted their first 12 hectares on a hill they named “Polkura,” meaning “yellow stone” in Mapuche, a nod to the yellow granite that defines the local soil.

Polkura’s wines are deeply rooted in their terroir. The decomposed granite and clay soils lend structure and minerality, while the nearby Pacific Ocean tempers the Mediterranean climate, allowing for slow, balanced ripening. Syrah remains the flagship varietal, but the vineyard also cultivates Malbec, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Tempranillo, Viognier, and Cabernet Sauvignon, each contributing complexity to their blends . Their  Secano Syrah, grown without irrigation, showcases the vineyard’s commitment to sustainability and purity of expression.

Polkura’s dedication to quality has earned them international acclaim. Their 2008 Syrah was featured in both Wine Spectator and Decanter’s Top 100 lists, while the “Block G+i” Syrah received 95 points from James Suckling and was named Best Southern Hemisphere Syrah at Australia’s Five Nations Wine Challenge . These accolades reflect the winery’s ability to craft wines that balance power with elegance, capturing the essence of their unique terroir.

Beyond winemaking, Polkura embraces a philosophy of “Wine with Purpose.” They are committed to sustainable practices, including dry farming and minimal intervention, to reduce their environmental impact. Visiting Polkura offers a chance to experience the harmony between land, grape, and craftsmanship.
