Colchagua Wineries

Maquis Winery

Maquis is tucked between the Tinguiririca River and the Chimbarongo estuary in the heart of Chile’s Colchagua Valley where time-honored tradition and modern sustainability blend seamlessly. More than just a vineyard, Maquis is a journey through Chile’s rich history, natural beauty, and winemaking excellence.

The roots of Maquis wine production stretch back to the 18th century, when Jesuit missionaries cultivated the land for winemaking—a sacred craft in more ways than one. The 19th century saw the vineyard pass into the hands of political royalty: two former Chilean Presidents, Federico Errázuriz Zañartu and Federico Errázuriz Echaurren. So revered was the valley’s tranquil setting that cabinet meetings were held on-site, prompting the construction of bridges—still standing today—that are now part of the region’s cultural heritage.

In 1916, the Hurtado family took ownership of Maquis. Ignacio Hurtado, just 23 years old at the time, built the estate’s first vinification and storage facilities. Nearly a century later, in 2002, the family solidified their long-term vision with the creation of a state-of-the-art, sustainable wine cellar, preserving Maquis’s essence while embracing innovation.

At Maquis, winemaking is still very much a hands-on affair. The grapes are treated with the utmost respect—handled as little as possible to maintain their natural character and allow the terroir to speak through every sip. The winery’s unique location between two waterways not only creates a stunning backdrop for visitors but also regulates the climate, protecting the vines from spring frosts and intense summer heat.

Maquis produces high-end wines that highlight the distinctiveness of each varietal. Their signature labels include:

–Maquis Gran Reserva, a bold and elegant red blend, often showcasing Carménère or Cabernet Franc.
–Maquis Franco, a standout single-varietal Cabernet Franc that has gained international recognition.
–Maquis Viola, a premium expression of Carménère, rich and complex, perfect for collectors.
–Maquis Rosé and Blanc, Crisp, refreshing options that reflect the vineyard’s balance of tradition and innovation.

Maquis wines have earned acclaim from some of the wine world’s most respected voices, including James Suckling, Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, regularly scoring 90+ points. These accolades reflect not just the winery’s quality, but also its commitment to sustainable practices and expressive winemaking.
